It starts with community,

The story of Reed Street begins in 2022, when SBCLT Board members Liz Gonzalez and Sandy Perry were door-knocking the Reed Street neighborhood. They connected with Tafhari Franklin (a current resident) and began discussing what a Community Land Trust is and how the model can benefit him and other tenants in the neighborhood. This kick-started a relationship with the property owner, and there was interest in selling to South Bay CLT. With a $1.6 million acquisition price, South Bay CLT sprang into action, launching a grassroots capital campaign.

The campaign lasted roughly 6 months, during which the team raised over $600,000!!

This campaign brought together many volunteers and local regional support, helping put South Bay CLT on the map when preservation was considered an afterthought in the affordable housing space. These funds were crucial to the acquisition, and LISC Bay Area provided a loan to acquire Reed Street.

In February 2023, South Bay CLT acquired the property, and most recently, in 2025, it underwent rehabilitation to address code violations resulting from deferred maintenance. Reed Street residents continue meeting monthly to organize in the community and actively fundraise to address property needs.

Most recently, Reed Street residents hosted a Reed Street Meet on May 30th, during which community members visited the property and learned about the work underway in the neighborhood.
